Just came across this on Pinstack for all the Pearl owners out there. Stack Pro Rcbjr posted the information on the Cingular OS 4.2.0.84.
Looks like this OS is what the new Cingular Pearls are shipping out with now.
Not sure what the differences are from the T-Mobile and other versions of the Pearl 4.2 OS. If you have tried it out please let us know what you think.
However it seems there is still no option to turn off the auto dim feature.
I know I love to have the most up to date OS, but only try it out if you are comfortable. And always remember to back up first.
Rare it is, you know, that any software rev is built without at least a few Known Issues- generally minor bugs that deemed inconsequential enough not to delay release.
Such is the case with BlackBerry OS 4.1 release 529 for the BlackBerry 87xx series.
In a post I put up on Saturday, you may have read about what has been fixed in this rev. Remember the old line, "accentuate the positive?"
But if you want to know what Known issues are in the "529," you can either read the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center document linked to the Read prompt at the bottom of this post- or just simply follow along with us here:
The BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center has posted an 11-page PDF document listing the changes within the BlackBerry OS 4.1.0.377 Release and the build 4.1.0.529 release for 8700 series devices.
You'd think the changes would be minor but then you would be wrong.
One key Functional change is that if your wireless provider is Cingular and you have enabled PIN1 SIM security you are now able to initiate an emergency call from the PIN1 code prompt.
The next changes the document describes are in Ring tines and Address Book.
Ring tones
SDR68878- Previously, if you were using a BlackBerry 8700 Wireless Handheld™ and you set the ring tone volume to high, the actual volume might have been much lower than the volume heard during a preview of the ring tone. SDR66253- Previously, the quickbell MIDI ring tone might not have played. SDR61653- Previously, if you tried to play the Cingular ring tone, your device might have reset after playing the tune for a few seconds.
Address Book
SDR85817- Previously, if you tried to copy a phone number from your address book to the SIM card phone book, your device might not have responded.
SDR60878-Previously, you might not have been able to open your SIM address book while Fixed Dialing Number mode was turned on.
The BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center reports a bug that occurs when users install a particular itertion of the BlackBerry OS 4.2 on their Pearl.
The bug results in a "downgrade equired" message, and is only for the T-Mobile Pearl.
Problem:occurs when you download BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.0.42 from the T-Mobile U.S. website. When you install the BlackBerry Device Software on your Peal, a downgrade required message appears.
Clifton of BlackBerry Alliance member Man & Machine writes to let us know that the $129 CoolMIR external BlackBerry keyboard supports every BlackBerry device except the BlackBerry Pearl 8100.
While that certainly is news, the reason why the Pearl isn't supported yet is even bigger news. That is, there seems to be some charging issues related to BlackBerry OS 4.2.
And it's not only OS 4.2 that seems to be encountering problems.
The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 will run BlackBerry Desktop Software Version 4.2.
Just a little while ago, the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center has just posted the release notes for BlackBerry Desktop Software V 4.2.
Here's what's new in V4.2, as compared to earlier builds:
Added the Media Manager tool, which wil lbe available for use with BlackBerry devices running 4.2 or later of BlackBerry device software. This tool will allow you to transfer files between your computer and your BlackBerry device's internal memory or optional media card external memory. Media Manager also supports file management of internal and external memory, which allows users to browse, add, delete, copy, rename and view non-system files and folders on the BlackBerry.
Don't let me forget to mention the Switch Card Media Wizard, which wil llet you transfer data from one media card to another.
He's recently updated his BlackBerry 7290 to BlackBerry OS 4.1 but after the procedure his browser icon seems to have disappeared.
"I got the themes to load fine and no where on the phone can I get a browser icon," he tells us. "Emails come through fine and Cingular Tier two and I have gone round and round to make sure the back end is provisioned correctly. Anyway to install a browser ap by way of desktop manager? and if so which one?"
By the way it is refreshing to read a report from a user who doesn't automatically blame tech support for something not happening.
It's then that Pinstacker msbrenda64 acknowledges that a conversation with a Cingular Tier Two probably has covered service books. But then she comes up with an alternative: Opera Mini.
The Blackberry Technical Knowledge Center has posted a Known Issues document describing why all of the contacts you inherit when you upgrade from BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell GroupWise 4.0 to 4.1 don't appear.
The issue occurs because contacts you have created prior to your BES upgrade cannot be correctly processed should you reactivate your BlackBerry devices.
Fortunately there is a workaround. This involves performing the following steps
Remove the affected account from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Add the account to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server again.
Assign the address book to the account.
Perform a security wipe of the BlackBerry device. For instructions, follow the Wipe Handheld procedure outlined in KB-02318.
There's a newly posted BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center page entitled "How To- Access the Address Book from the Phone Application." Link below.
Here's why this is a document you may wish to check out.
As you may or may not know, the phone application in BlackBerry Device Software 4.0 lets you access your Address Book by typing characters within the Phone Hotlist. That's if- and only if- your Phone List View is not set to Call Log.
There's been a tweak in 4.1, though. You cannot directly access your Address Book by typing characters into the Phone Hotlist.
No can do, y'all.
So that means you will need to this directly by addressing your address book.
The quickest way to do this is by pressing the Send key (shown at right).
Like to plan ahead? Good life skill to have, IMHO.
BlackBerry users who "plan ahead" might want to read the newly posted BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center document entitled "How To - Configure the calendar to synchronize future items or items that fall within a range of days."
By "range of days," we are talking about, oh, 15, 30, ..and literally up until forever.
Your options are the most robust if you are running BlackBerry OS 4.0 or above.
The BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center has just posted a new How To document.
Title: Restore messages from a previous BlackBerry device to a new BlackBerry device during an enterprise activation .
Let's go thru the problem and then the solution.
"When BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 is used with certain carriers, Short Message Service (SMS) message corruption occurs when sending an SMS message using a DatagramConnection," the How To Notes. "The text that is received by the SMS recipient will appear garbled."
The solution is to either use a MessageConnection instead of a DatagramConnection or install a BlackBerry Device Software version earlier than 4.1.
The BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 2.0 is known to display an error entitled, "You have configured the maximum number of email accounts."
According to a newly posted document on the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center, one way this can come about is if you upgrade a BlackBerry Connect-enabled device from BlackBerry Internet Service 1.8 with four integrated email accounts, one will be lost in order to conform to the three-email account limit.
There is a resolution. Not one which changes things the way you want, but makes the best of the situation.
"When deleting an integrated email account from the BlackBerry Internet Service, also delete the corresponding service book from the device prior to accepting a new service book for a new integration," the document advises. "For instructions on deleting a service book from the device, see the user guide for your device."
The doc describes the phenomenon as one in which when you try to install desktop manager and open the installation log file you see an error message that says:
"Error opening installation log file verify that the specified log file exist and is writable."
Although the survey was published last fall and has been sponsored by Microsoft, that's only two strikes.
But since many home runs have been hit with two strikes, I am going to cut this study comparing the RIM BlackBerry OS 4.0 and BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 vs. the Windows Mobile 5.0 Messaging and Security Feature Pack with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 Solution.
BlackBerry partisans, prepare to get your feelin's hurt. The results show Microsoft has RIM beat on total cost of ownership, tighter integration, and larger selection of applications.
RIM gets a bone for superior user policy management and security.
But that's a big bone, so like "the game show contestant with the parting gift" referred to in that great old Blues Traveler song "Runaround," I guess everyone walks away with something.
